Good RTC board with some flaws

This is a really good RTC board that works well with most popular Arduino/ESP libraries. It's a higher quality RTC option that's hard to come by, so that's a big plus. There are several annoyances that you must contend with. First is the resistor mentioned above that you need to desolder to avoid exploding the non-rechargeable battery. Really surprising that this isn't mentioned in the list. But it's easy enough to do. You can even just cut it off the board if you want to be a beast at it. Another annoyance is that the board comes with headers pre-soldered for vertical mounting. My application requires horizontal mounting so again I have to bring a soldering iron with a new board to get what I want. Also on the opposite edge of the board is a nice, minimalistic SDA/SCL/Vcc/GND connector that many of us need. If they had NOT soldered the connector at the right angle like most other boards do, it would be easy to use what you want. Instead you have to desolder/re-solder to get there. The last problem is the power LED on the board. It goes without saying that the board is powered and the LED only consumes power. If you're running a low-power application (such as a battery-backed RTC), the LED is just plain annoying. Back to the soldering iron for correction. I'm attaching a couple of photos, one of which shows the battery installed with the correct orientation (positive facing up).

Pros
  • Quality construction
Cons
  • Blunt hardware
