The toaster took some time to warm up and average the temperature. The instructions say to set the power to high to burn off the dust and restart the toaster, then turn off the power to use the toaster regularly. The first 5 toasties resulted in burnt toast even when set to power 1. I took a break for a few days then tried again and it worked fine.
