Recently I tested many M.2 and U.2 NVMe SSDs for function. While you'll find M.2 slots (1 or 2 anyway) on many consumer-grade desktop motherboards, I haven't found many workstation/server boards with U.2 interfaces unless they have to be in 1U. or a 2U form factor server chassis. This is where this element comes into play. It's definitely no frills, but there really isn't much that this board can do. Basically you just grab a PCIe x4 slot and get an SFF-8639 along with enough cards to screw a real SSD onto it. I took this board and installed it on various servers/workstations from SuperMicro, Tyan, Asus and HP. Overall my results were good. In all cases the disk could be used and in most cases made bootable. Check compatibility with your operating system. Also, you need to make sure your motherboard chipset supports it. Such a device is basically a commodity. Either it works or it doesn't work. In fact, there are no performance differences from brand to brand. This article has worked with several Intel U.2 NVMe SSDs and there is no reason to believe it will not work with other SSDs. The server cabinet cover does not interfere in the upper horizontal riser. And that's the only thing that I think could go wrong. RECOMMENDED.
