More unusual than disposable polyester wadding; Seems to work fine

For the past 20 years I've used the typical rear-hanging type filter system in my 90-gallon freshwater tank. The system pumps the water from the aquarium into a small reservoir, which overflows back into the aquarium after contact with dirty water containing activated carbon, ammocarb and filter media cartridges that often need to be replaced. The cost of these replacement filter media cartridges is increasing rapidly so I immediately started looking for an alternative. My first alternative was to rip all the dirt off the filter media cartridge and just reuse the remaining flow hoop, which I wrapped in quilted material (polyester batting). This approach has worked very well. The aquarium filter media shown here is certainly an upgrade from the disposable polyester wadding material I use, and the cost is significantly higher than the wadding, but still much lower than the official media cartridges. I cut this new media to the size and shape of the old cartridge mount and then installed it. The flow rate through the new material is high enough to allow the water to flow along the appropriate paths. The filter material sold here is MUCH better than the disposable cotton and seems to be working well so far. I am concerned about how easy it is to clean thoroughly without using soap which can leave toxic residue in the aquarium. Not thorough cleaning can lead to snails and other problems that I just didn't have when starting out with a new filter media each time. The time will show.
