Review on Accell Power Travel Surge Protector - 3 Outlets, 2 USB ๐Ÿ’ก Charging Ports, Folding Plug - Black, ETL Listed - 612 Joules, 2.1A Output by John Mceachern

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Great travel charger, well packaged and can charge an iPad at almost full speed via USB

This is my favorite charger at the moment. It has surge protection, but I bought it to plug in rather than protect. But that's a plus. Two USB ports can deliver a total output of 2.1A/10W. So using just one USB port is enough to charge your iPad at almost full speed (the iPad came with a 10W charger for years, and newer ones now use 12W chargers). The downside is that you have to avoid using the second port or things will slow down again. But in general this is a plus. Many travel chargers still have 1 amp total for USB ports. Three sockets are very well placed. One left, one right and one in front. Even with three thick-walled warts, you'll have no problem blocking an outlet. Great design. The outlet itself is a mixed bag. The advantage is that it is collapsible. Important in the packaging. On the minus, the grounding plug is slightly separated from the other two contacts. There are a few steps required to provision a device before connecting it. Overall, this is my current favorite. I also used: Belkin Rotary Mini 3 Outlet Charger, Dual USB Surge Protector - Legacy version with 1 amp/5W total USB output. I've never been able to use both ports at the same time, unless I'm using one to charge a very low-power Bluetooth headset. The Belkin has a 3-prong swivel fork, which is a plus, but the downside is that it's not foldable, making it harder to pack. There is a newer 2.1 amp Belkin version that fixes the USB issue. I have also used: Monster MP OTG300 USB-W Outlets To Go Power Strip with USB Worldwide - which is now being discontinued but I still carry it with me. It was one of the few strips that was small and specifically marketed as 220v compatible. It came with a universal converter so I could take it to Italy and connect my (220V compatible only) devices. It has a 1-foot cord, but it wraps around and plugs into one of its own outlets, so it's actually easier to pack than the Belkin I mentioned above. Three power sockets, two on one side, one on the other, plus an almost useless 5W USB port on top. There is a newer version of this unit that has not been discontinued ie 4 sockets but no USB and according to reviews MAY or NOT be rated for 220v. Seems to work but is not classified as such so be careful. The last travel charger I can compare to is: Tripp Lite TRAVELER3USB Laptop Surge Protector USB 3 Charger 540W Socket - also discontinued. The newer version they recommend is the SK30USB which is exactly the same charger as this Accell but with a different look. I would not recommend the old TRAVELER3USB. The same problem with USB with a maximum of 5 watts. Three exits. The configuration is similar to the Monster, with a fork that wraps around for storage, but is square rather than rectangular. But the Monster was the only one I listed above that was rated for international (220v) use. If you google, many companies sell the exact same charger as this Accell. I chose Accell based on Wirecutter's recommendation. It's consistently the cheapest ($14-15) and since they're all obviously made by the same contract manufacturer, grab the deal!
