Easy to install in tight spaces
I service my cars and the 2007 Dodge Nitro that works with them has very limited access to the oil filter (frame and cross member limit available space). The friction surface on the filter makes manual installation (and removal after 5,000 miles of use) relatively easy, and if the filter is overtightened during installation, a filter wrench can also be used to aid in removal.
