The light is very bright I got this because I couldn't see the path at night with my previous light and that problem is now resolved. I usually leave it on the second highest setting until I'm in total darkness. There are brighter lights out there, but I like the level this one gives off - it might hurt to look directly at it, but it won't blind a car. I didn't like the tail light. Instead, it emits white light. normal red color for taillights. Another downside is that the front light cannot be detached without undoing the entire strap (although this is still easy to do). Since the front light is really what I wanted, I will forget about the rear light and give the front light 5 stars. It really meets all my needs. I ride my bike 7 miles at night and haven't had to charge it for 2 weeks. He can probably go 2 more before I have to reload.
