OK, the brown thing is plastic, but it's pretty soft. The strap that holds the folded case together when all the slots are full is 2-3 inches shorter to allow for snapping. My advice is to cut it off right away and make it longer if possible. Go to a large fabric store, buy a strong elastic, tie it together and use it as an elastic to wrap around a few times. or buy a 1" wide elastic, sew on a loop and wrap it. Because the thing is full it will want to open. Remember whatever you conjure up to keep it closed. Otherwise is this case a really good buy and very functional for storing pencils, finer markers etc. I may buy more for other artwork.
