I decided to try WD-40 rust remover on some of my grandfather's very old tools that I recently 'rediscovered' after having owned them for over 60 years. I selected a few I wouldn't soak in WD-40 RRS (low resolution image left) to compare the results to the pieces I soaked overnight (image right). Initially all the tools were very rusty but not pitted or stained. I was very pleased with the soaked things. After some work with scotch brite sponges they looked better than I had hoped. And the soaking didn't damage any of the wooden handles. The old ax looked ready for action. After that experience, I used the rest of the gallon to soak some of my own rusty screwdrivers, drill bits, files, pliers, and an old hammer head. The results were good but not impressive. I have found that the better the tool, the better the result. Some cheap instruments developed a black stain that was difficult to remove. I rated this product a 5. It doesn't emit fumes, it's fully biodegradable and won't harm your hand or other rustproof materials. It does exactly what it says on the tin: it slowly removes light to moderate rust. [If you look closely at both photos, you can see small hooks like the ones your great-grandfather used to tie his spats.]
