Review on Reese Towpower 7030400 Professional Receiver by Scott Yenson

Revainrating 1 out of 5

UPDATED - VERY LOVED

I will improve my rating over time if this security pin holds up. It worked as advertised on a Toyota Highlander 2" hitch. The keys feel cheap and when assembled they don't feel as strong as I expected. Also, the lid is quite cheap and likely won't stay in place with too much use. I sprayed the parts with oil to prevent rusting so we'll see how it holds up over time. I've had a hard time finding many good locking pin options and this is one of the best options. I hope that the other estimates are correct in the long run. So far I'm happy with this purchase and would recommend this needle. UPDATE 3/9/14 Castle is falling apart after two months of use. I've been using this lock on my trailer hitch since early January. It has only been removed a couple of times to replace the decorative boot hitch cover and once to hitch a trailer. In general, I could remove and replace this lock half a dozen times in two months. I would say that we are low power users of our vehicles. We live in the south, so the north hasn't experienced cold temperatures, and it hasn't been particularly hot, muggy, or humid here for the last two months. It was not dropped, not touched, and the car did not move from the normal road surface. But Reese Towpower's castle falls apart. In particular, the end where the castle is located is divided into two parts. When I unlocked the mechanism yesterday, it fell apart in my hand as I pulled it off the pin. The locking mechanism is housed in a larger metal sleeve. Now that they've separated I see that the sleeve is only held in place with a small metal pin - the size of the point of a pen - which is inserted through the sleeve into a small hole drilled in the lock. From the outside of the case it appears to be nailed/hammered almost flush to the steel of the case. The pin's tiny protrusion does not hold the sleeve in the locking mechanism, so the two-piece lock is now a three-piece lock. I put it back together and it's holding up enough not to fall off during normal driving, but who knows? If it comes loose, it is possible to access part of the locking mechanism itself through holes along the locking shaft itself. I don't know if this makes it easier to disable the keyless locking mechanism or not. All in all I am very disappointed and am considering returning this Revain lock. I bought a "professional" lock hoping it would hold up better than some of the other products reviewed on Revain. There is no such happiness. Beware of this castle.
