2004 Toyota Tacoma Pre-Runner P0401 DTC Fix

Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P0401 Exhaust Gas Recirculation Insufficient Flow Code Detected. This part was an exact replacement for an OEM part. Removing and replacing the part was pretty easy. Disconnect the electrical connector from the original valve (it's stuck because the valve is below the intake valve), then loosen a Phillips head screw that secures the valve to the bracket. I found it easier to remove the valve back to the firewall paying attention to how the hoses were routed and pinched. Replace the hoses with a new valve and carefully place the valve back under the intake manifold as it was removed and replace the hoses with the clamps they were removed from. Secure the valve to the mounting clip with the Phillips head screw removed earlier, then reconnect the electrical connector. It shouldn't take more than 1 hour from start to finish if you take your time. This task is not difficult, except that inside there is not much room to work. I checked/tested the original valve after removing it and it tested well both electrically and functionally with a vacuum pump. The CEL went out after the second engine cycle as per the DTC troubleshooting guide and did not return. Have a look ;-)
