Review on MTX Thunder500.1 Thunder Series Car Amplifier by Curtis Domus

Revainrating 2 out of 5

Normal amp with problems. Suitable for Car Audio

Using this amplifier to drive 8 4 ohm speakers connected in parallel for an effective 2 ohm load. There's plenty of power, but for most applications it doesn't sound $110 better than a Planet Audio 4-channel amp (which also uses AB topology). In fact, there is a buzzing sound coming out of my DML speakers. The distortion seems to be related to specific frequencies. Planet Audio: no problem. $15 PCB amp from China? No questions. I isolated the amp from other embedded processors and no matter what DAC, DSP or non-DSP, this amp will produce distortion. Also, the speaker terminals are tightened into soft screws with a small Allen key. One of them ripped me off the first time with very little torque. It would have been nice if MTX had included a few extra terminal screws as they are so soft and the little hex doesn't bite too tight. It doesn't matter if the audio is messed up.

Pros
  • Very Impressive
Cons
  • Faulty
