Review on ๐Ÿ—บ๏ธ TomTom Go 5-inch 50 3D GPS Device by James Pfettscher

Revainrating 2 out of 5

Excellent display, fast signal reception. down from there. Low noise, hours of software updating, unwanted "demo " mode,

+1) Great display+2) Fast signal reception Negative.-1) Low sound - half as much quiet as the old TomTom it replaced -2) Almost 6 hours to update via PC. Internet 25x5, changed ports, all tricks. The update takes over 6 hours. Seriously.-3) Most of the time I want it on but no navigation. Just to show me miles per hour, direction of travel, POI and upcoming intersections, ramps, etc. This device will NOT do this and after a minute or two it will go into "demo mode". I know the districts in general from the street. I can't believe TomTom intentionally built a demo mode into the software when it's idle. that's the deal breaker for me. It's like pop-ups in your browser. annoys. Also, the sound is too quiet. annoyingly low. and support gave me the same excuse "working on refresh rate" that they have given me for the past 7 years. Also, the favorites you create on your PC for GPS will not be saved. I do not know why. but it's not for me. I also called about the demo mode and was told to reset the drums and more. and there is no way to turn off demo mode. Technical support was ignorant and offered to open a troubleshooting ticket. I refused and just took it back to Walmart and got my $100 back. I'm tired of testing products I pay full price for. And went to a pawn shop and bought a $25 TomTom VIA 1420 which also took 4 hours to update, had a great display, LOUD sound and NO DEMO MODE! Particularities. In summary, it has one of the best displays of any GPS device I've seen. Very pleasing to the eye and very good contrast. A GPS signal is received immediately. The power cord, suction cup and lighter/USB power adapter were excellent. But I couldn't hear it at freeway speed. very muffled even at full volume. The traffic warning feature is free for 3 months. It downloads traffic and road works updates from the internet using your phone data. Did I mention it clogged my business class 25x5 internet for almost 6 hours when I immediately updated it? I'm not sure if I want this device to pair with my mobile phone for traffic data. fair warning. Also, tech support informed me that most information about traffic, road works or detours is sent via TomTom users uploading map corrections. I don't know about you, but when I'm stuck in traffic, the last thing on my mind is to walk home, hook up my GPS and upload a map fix to send to TomTom, and that could take hours of my time take what I've just expended. in traffic. Needless to say, the live traffic feature was utterly useless, at least here in upstate New York. The information he showed for the I290 is months out of date. In fact, all the detours he showed came from construction projects from previous years. I cannot justify paying TomTom a monthly fee for a feature that we as consumers make available to them and for which our support is spotty at best. If you have a newer car, the car stereo will have an RDS feature (check your owner's manual) that does just that - alerts you to road conditions, detours, etc. on your car stereo. that's the way it is. To be fair if you just want to use it for point-to-point navigation and don't need it idle on your dashboard, but still show you miles per hour, driving direction, POIs and lanes with no destination programmed. in, then it works. But I need to show myself where I am when I am NOT oriented. And I need to be able to hear it. Deal breakers for sure. and if used can be bought just as well (or better in my case) at a flea market or a pawn shop for 1/5 the price, and other brands with big screens and similar features on the same shelf for the same price, then id bypasses this one. too many errors. every feature is an expensive upgrade. The first image of the device appears in a strange "demo mode", there are dozens of screens showing you the features of the device and so far neither me nor tech support can disable this "feature". The second figure shows the display. It's definitely a great display, superb colors, contrast and clarity.

Pros
  • High score for support and durability from testers
Cons
  • Not as thick as other options
