Paint will boil as thousands of degrees from your stoves hit this metal bracket. I mean these rings don't have the same finish as the SR71 Blackbird (military aircraft) and it's some sort of cast iron but it does have some flex but you'll probably need some pliers to bend the ring and I haven't seen it , how all the heat from the furnaces deforms this ring; As for the smell, I had no odors from these rings when they were red hot or deformed and these rings were good for me and I think I even ordered them twice. Overall I really like them and they work great.
