The trim function on the older 6800 system was a bit patchy due to the tension angle of the cable. The seatpost angle either made it a little worse or a little better, but it was finicky at best. The 8000 series offers direct line tension, eliminating the need for a barrel adjuster and simplifying setup. Now my trim function works as intended. I use an 8000 derailleur with a full 6800 groupset, so there's no reason to change anything else if you don't want to. A word to note, you must remove the chain to install the derailleur and the old cable tag might be a bit short for a new run, but that's a cosmetic factor. The new cable tag is inserted into the cap after it has been fixed.
