Review on πŸ“Έ Canon Speedlite 220EX: A Reliable Flash for Canon EOS SLR Cameras - Previous Model by Joseph Stone

Good partner for G6

I bought my G6 in December, borrowed a Canon 420 EX flash and liked the results, but was wondering if the smaller, lighter and cheaper 220 EX would be good enough? Some of the reviews here say it's too weak. That? I bought one to find out and took both out to the backyard at 8pm to try them out on the G6 in 5ft, 10ft, 20ft and 40ft. Verdict #1: The G6 has a good built-in flash. It takes good pictures in the limited range of 5m (or 4m if the lens is set to telephoto) and works well as fill flash. Complete failure over 20 feet. Conclusion #2: The 420EX (range 24.2 metres) and 220EX (range 15.7 metres/51.5 feet) both produce better images than the built-in flash and both have a longer range. However, both are limited to an autofocus range of 5 to 7 meters. That's right, no flash can focus on a subject more than 20 feet away in the dark when the lens is mounted on a telephoto lens. Both worked well when the lens was set to wide at 40ft. Final conclusion: I leave 220 EX. The G6 is small and light, just like the 220EX. They make a good team, but the G6 also works well on its own up close.
