Review on Origin Digital Elitech STC-1000 Temperature Controller - 110V Centigrade Thermostat with 2 Relays by Tim Ram

Fixed air dryer for almost $100 less than factory parts

Both the hygrostat and defrost thermostat on my 20 year old American Frigidaire dehumidifier got stuck and turned into an iceberg. Frigidaire charged about $140 for both parts. That's almost the price of a new dryer! I repaired almost a hundred dollars less with this STC-1000; its brother, the WH8040 humidistat; and a 120 VAC relay to extend the life of relay contacts in controls. (It's worth noting that doing so invalidated the dehumidifier's UL listing. Had it been newer, I would have lost my warranty as well.) The controllers were too deep for the dehumidifier's front panel, so I added two design blocks to the front of the Panels to get the required clearance. Setting the STC-1000's defrost temperature wasn't as easy as I expected. It seems that too low a temperature, even above frost formation, reduces the dehumidification rate. I have currently set the chiller line, where the old defrost thermostat was installed, to 7 to 15 degrees C. The dehumidifier is now at least as reliable as when it was new. Installing the humidity sensor outdoors, in the ambient air, also improved its stability. I can't say how long these controllers will last, but so far this little gadget looks like a winner.

Pros

Cons
  • Incredible piggy bank
