I used them to pierce the upper cartilage of the ears. I have tried the normal type before but they are only for normal earring holes. A piece of skin that can only be pierced. The ears then swell and cover the back, and you're screwed. (pain like no other) SO, they have no support. This way the holes HEAL FASTER. Easier to keep clean (I used a narrow-tipped nasal aspirator and an infant rubber bulb to cool, flush and disinfect the piercing). BE CAREFUL and only BE CAREFUL while you sleep so they don't push through or crawl out while you sleep. I replaced them with surgical steel pins after 2 weeks. No questions. Great buy. I suppose they could work for noses too, but I do NOT want my nose pierced (sorry?).
