yes you really want it

I've bought several of these, including myself. I have given them to several nephews/nieces who are moving into their homes for the first time. They were all really amazed at how easy they were to install/remove and how firmly they could hold the door. One tends to do long hikes (e.g. in hostels along the Appalachian Trail), another lives in a dorm with questionable security, a third lives in an apartment with a roommate who doesn't always respect personal boundaries, and a third plans travel and occasionally stay in unusual hotels. Personally, I use mine to secure the front door of my home so no one forgets or opens the door when my parrots are exercising or flying free around the house. The devices themselves are brilliant little ideas. I think most people who can't install them on the various standard US doors probably just install them a little weird. Yes, some skill is required during installation and you may want to practice on the different doors in your home, from bedrooms and bathrooms to your front door. Occasionally I'd find a slightly tight latch hole and needed some "convincing" to install the panel and I found that one of my doors had a copper strip which was particularly finicky, but I didn't have a door that I didn't even open travel, even if I really wanted to. As for actual security, it will definitely prevent someone from opening the door normally even if they have the key. This discourages most people from entering the room. Hypothetically, someone could still kick the door. So if you're concerned about this type of physical intrusion, you might want to make sure you have one of the longer 3-4 foot security panels that make doors harder to kick in, or use at least 3 inch screws in the locking plate. With a reinforced strike plate, the lock would at least make it more difficult to break open the door, since the door itself would also be reinforced at its most sensitive point by the red part of the lock. I gave one away that I liked and I suspect I'll end up buying more than gifts.
