The base is designed to be mounted on the air duct itself. This is not possible due to the seam construction of most pipes. If your vent pipe sticks out too far, the base won't sit flush with the wall either. I was able to cut the grooves deep enough to install the socket at the end of the vent pipe, although I couldn't mount it flush with the outside wall. I had screws long enough to get to the wall of the house. I smeared window sealant into the tube along the edge of the base where it entered. I carefully tightened the screws until they were tight. The rest of the vent cover is easy to assemble. My old vent cap had a round valve and was made of thin plastic that allowed birds to nest in the vent. This did not allow the clothes to dry completely without running additional cycles. The vent works and if the birds don't get in it will do its job which is why I didn't rate it lower.
