This champagne stopper works great with the right bottles and holds soda very well. First, how does it work. The rubber seal in the center is spring loaded. You place it on top of the bottle, press firmly and squeeze the rubber seal about half an inch and then pull the wings together to clamp the ring/lip under the neck of the champagne bottle. If the bottom of this ring/edge is too beveled on a champagne bottle, it won't hold. When it's flat, it holds up surprisingly well. I've only used it on two different champagne bottles. One worked great and the other had too much beveling at the bottom of the champagne ring so I just wrapped it with a rubber band to hold the clasps in place. I don't think the gum makes that much of a difference and I am more than happy with this purchase. It pays for itself after the first use. I took off a star because it could work on more bottles if its wings/clasps were also spring loaded (some bottles don't need a rubber band).
