Cheap, Crumbly, Immiscible

Okay, so... my painting turned out great overall. But I chose these because they were cheaper. I have some pastel experience and was very disappointed. They fell apart so much. I couldn't mix them at all without the color washing off and sticking together on the paper. I ended up just layering and layering and layering the pastels so that they kind of blended together in the painting. It was almost like a pencil. I've found that heating over a candle makes them blend a little better, but they just don't have the soft, creamy feel or ability to blend like other pastels I've used before. I thought I was using them wrong...? So I watched some videos (note I've used pastel colors in the past but doubted myself as it was a long time ago) and I used them correctly. They just aren't good pastels. The colors were very pigmented so I'm disappointed. The box was beautiful. They just don't have that soft creamy texture when the pastel hits the paper. The pigment is not durable. Nice colors but in places they were darker or clumpier even with constant pressure while painting.
