I use 3 of these to extend a Cat5 run. It's definitely not the best method, but it really saved me a lot of trouble. The house had a coil 5 for the phone wiring and I repurposed it for the network. Rather than running new cables, which would be a major ordeal, I terminated my existing Cat5 lines with RJ45 connectors and used this product to connect them to a long section of the house. In the end I was hoping for a gigabit connection but expected to be satisfied with a 100 megabit connection. To my surprise, I got a reliable gigabit connection.
