Readings are slightly lower for certain surfaces.
This instrument easily undermeasures indoor wall surfaces. However, within 3 degrees of the correct value. When I measure the water temperature in my pool I believe it was within 2 degrees. So for $14 you get readings that are close enough for most purposes. I haven't tried it for cooking or really cold dishes.
