No sign of lock or bike

I used to have a standard Master cable lock that worked fine and came with a key. After hearing about bike thefts in my area, I decided to "upgrade" the stock cable lock to this chain lock, naively believing it would be more secure than my 3/4-inch cable lock that was $10 at Target and probably cut out could be with kitchen scissors. About a week after I started using this chain lock (which I was very happy with prior to The Incident), upon returning to my apartment after a weekend out of town, I found my bike had completely disappeared from the railing . in front of my door. There was no sign of a lock or a bicycle. A few days later I noticed a lock on the outside of the apartment building under some bushes. It was severed down the middle, and a chain hung from a red plastic case. It wasn't even cut at the top of the lock where the code mechanism is but right in the MIDDLE of the chain. I don't recommend this lock if you live in a low crime area. Open source and not a worthy investment (although the $7.xx E-Tag is certainly attractive). After saving $30 and buying a cheap padlock, I lost my $300 bike. Buy a strong kryptonite U-lock (which, by the way, is NOT indestructible either, but takes a lot more than bolt cutters and/or crowbars to pick). It's a $30 investment that actually pays for itself if your bike doesn't get stolen.
