Review on Hopkins 43415 Plug-In Simple Vehicle Wiring Kit: Simplify and Enhance Your Vehicle's Wiring with Ease by Phillip Reed

It was a lot of fun to say the least

This product is designed for universal use. If your 4runner has a tow kit and stops working, THIS IS NOT A DIRECT REPLACEMENT FOR THIS TOYOTA OEM BOX. This product will work but I found that it is designed to be placed next to the passenger's tail light and you need to route the cable from the driver's side. Toyota's OEM box is on the driver's side and works similarly. So I found myself removing the Toyota box and wiring completely before proceeding. Also, if you have a towing kit, you will see that your plug-in is mounted on the hitch frame, this product's wiring harness DOES NOT FIT THIS HARNESS, and this wiring harness runs under the body, up through the duct, and onto the driver's side. ! Since the wiring harness won't fit anyway, you can connect it to the wiring harness OR run a new one on the passenger side (ALSO BUY A SPADE PLUG BRACKET AS THE NEW PLUG WILL NOT FIT IN THE OLD BRACKET). The factory plug is on the driver's side, I put mine on the passenger's side for 3 reasons, the new box will be on that side. Pulling the wiring harness past the spare tire was too tight. And finally, my screw heads were rusty and of course both heads broke off, which means that 2 new holes have to be drilled under the clutch. It was a lot of fun to say the least! What I thought would take 10 minutes ended up taking about 2 hours. Still better than buying a $200 Toyota OEM replacement.

Pros
  • Plug connects car and trailer wiring with a simple plug in
Cons
  • Unreliable
