Instructions unclear but workable

This product was fairly easy to install, but set it up in reverse for my 2002 4Runner. The power pack and short cables have been marked to run on the passenger side, but the hole in the frame is on the driver's side. I installed it opposite the mark and it works great. The instructions are a little unclear as to what to do with the ground wire (I just attached it to the existing bolt with a nut). Overall a great product that works well!

3rd Gen 4Runner Tips

Easy to install. However, depending on the vehicle, you may need to swap the box on the right or left side. My 2002 OEM 4Runner box was on the driver's side, but this box had to be placed on the passenger side or the headlights were reversed. The only thing that had to be done was find a good hole to carefully insert 4 pins from the bottom - on the right side near the bottom skin pull out a square plug in the bottom, a little to the left you can run the wire through another small hole and it…

Hopkins Trailer Wiring Harness 43415

I am a master level auto technician and technician in the Toyota and Lexus factories. I bought this for my 4runner as I didn't want to pay OEM prices and the vulnerabilities of the factory system just duplicated the crash again. I was excited about this system. I installed it in less than 15 minutes in the dark using a screwdriver and a 10mm wrench. OEM plugs, fit and finish are better than the factory plugs. No need for battery power. The control unit remains protected from the weather in the…

Hopkins Trailer Light Converter 43415

When the factory installed converter failed in my 2000 4Runner and the local Toyota dealer told me it would cost $200 to replace, my search for a secondary converter led me to this part. Installation was easy and the only "extra" I needed to install was a zip tie to secure the box in the rear fender. All the plugs fit perfectly into the existing plugs in the car and the converter works as advertised and as expected. Interestingly my factory converter was mounted on the left side of the car…

'99 4Runner, SR5. Installed and replaced today.

'99 4Runner SR5 Installed today, replaced defective Toyota OEM converter. The product itself appears to be decently made and replacing the existing seat belt wasn't a big deal. Took a couple of hours, there's quite a bit of interior trim to remove if you do it right, and if you're in a hurry to finish an old truck you're going to ruin everything so don't do it. I'm not in a hurry. Would have done it in 45 minutes if I had to if I knew where all the tricky trim screws are. this will need to be…

plug and play Light! Note the notes in the rating.

99 4runner with factory tow package. My problem was that the trailer lights didn't work. I assumed it was the controller as many people say. Well it's true. It was the controls. After installing this wiring harness, the trailer lights will now work. It's only 4 pins but it suits my needs. Installation: It's easy. It took two hours but if you follow my instructions it only takes one hour. Because I had to do it twice. Instructions: You can't screw this up if you don't follow the instructions to…

Easy 15 minute install

My 2000 Toyota 4Runner didn't have a Class 3 hitch so I found it at a junkyard ($40) and installed it myself. Now I bought this belt to fix a trailer light fuse to connect ($37). ) and installation was easy, just remove the rear sunroof treadplate (5 screws) and pull back panels on each side, disconnect existing tail light connections and plug in this harness, perfect fit, no effort, snaps in place instantly! The only thing not listed in the instructions that come with it is a ground wire…

It was a lot of fun to say the least

This product is designed for universal use. If your 4runner has a tow kit and stops working, THIS IS NOT A DIRECT REPLACEMENT FOR THIS TOYOTA OEM BOX. This product will work but I found that it is designed to be placed next to the passenger's tail light and you need to route the cable from the driver's side. Toyota's OEM box is on the driver's side and works similarly. So I found myself removing the Toyota box and wiring completely before proceeding. Also, if you have a towing kit, you will see

Pros
  • Plug connects car and trailer wiring with a simple plug in
Cons
  • Unreliable
