Good image quality and ease of use

Night vision, especially IR night vision, is becoming cheaper and this device offers good image quality as well as video recording at a reasonable price. Although it's called "goggles" and looks like binoculars, only one of the "lenses" on the front is actually a camera lens; another IR source. The viewing screen at the other end is not a pair of eyepieces but a rectangular LCD screen. The shape of the screen isn't as wide as the shape of the device suggests, but it offers a good perspective. The shape and style suggest it's meant to be held squarely in front of the face, like binoculars, but I don't think many people will be able to focus that close without the use of reading glasses - I can't. I found it more comfortable to hold it a few inches from my face. This allows light to leak out from behind, which can be a factor if camouflage is an issue. The included instruction manual is less helpful than it could be as the instructions are another example of being written or translated by someone with less than perfect English. This is enough to understand how to turn it on and off, and other parameters can be viewed with a little effort. There are several settings that can be tweaked, including the intensity of the LED (very useful) and the video resolution, which is probably best kept at maximum unless you're using a micro SD card with very little storage space. The advertised battery life is more than enough for all night unless you plan to use the VCR full time. A tripod mounting screw is included and I would recommend using a tripod for shooting. I spent several days testing the display and recording capabilities of this device both indoors and outdoors. Overall I think it offers good image quality and reasonable usability, and I can use it for wildlife observation and maybe security and surveillance. Price is always a factor, of course, and Revain lists several seemingly identical night vision goggles/camcorders ranging from $150 to $265, putting this particular example squarely in the middle. The savvy buyer will no doubt benefit from shopping around before buying and comparing prices and features.
