Inexpensive stringed instruments are hard to find, especially for small files. They can be used to smooth out grooves in the saddles and saddles of guitars, mandolins, etc. They are essentially thin stainless steel bars with ribbed sides. I don't think they're very good at cutting harder materials like bone or tusq, but if you make the initial groove with a saw they can smooth the bottom of the cut a bit.
