We have been using this insert daily in our Breville Smart Oven for over 12 weeks now. I've cooked roasts, baked cakes and made plain toast, baked frozen pizzas and also baked biscuits in them. The bake time in some cases was an hour or more at 350°F. I also used the 450°F heat setting for at least 25 minutes. I just checked this liner for "white spots" or other signs of burns but found nothing. He coped with drops of various products (sticky or greasy) and just wiped with a dry cloth. There was never an odor that we could detect and our small dogs seem to be fine. I mention dry clothes and small dogs for good reason. As far as I can tell, using detergent or submerging this item in water to clean it is probably not advisable. It can trap pockets of water or cleaning solution that can cause the liner to "boil" the next time you heat it (much like water in a popcorn kernel pushes the kernel out when heated). Small dogs are mentioned because Teflon gives off toxic fumes to small animals. BIRDS ARE PARTICULARLY AT RISK FROM THIS SMOKE. Most experienced bird owners know not to use Teflon in high temperatures as YOUR BIRDS will DIE if exposed to these fumes. I'm not sure about other small animals and toddlers, but according to the canary-in-the-mine principle, what's not good for the canary must also be bad for small animals and toddlers. For those who have tried ordering and cutting their liner "a little too big," this can also damage the liner, exposing the fiberglass inner liner with "rough" scissor edges, and creating fiberglass dust. Typically, most of the drips fall where the food is, and most of the food doesn't touch the walls of the oven. Big "wins" will smoke and turn into a big mess no matter what. Avoid cutting your lining by measuring first and then ordering the right size. Fire may result if the heating elements are too close to the insert. That seems logical. Aluminum foil can also be ignited and these fumes are also toxic. Anything that burns produces smoke, and nothing in that smoke is safe to inhale. If aluminum foil works well in your toaster oven and the manufacturer says it's an acceptable liner, keep using it. Breville warns that the aluminum foil in their smart oven is a safety hazard, which is why we don't use foil. So far so good with our ship. I will continue to exercise caution and regularly check this item for signs of wear (or fire, as may be the case here). The bottom of our oven came out clean and free of burn marks from this liner. Anything that burns or catches fire at the bottom of the stove leaves a mark. In general, don't leave your house unattended while the toaster is running. If you smell smoke, turn it off immediately and inspect the liner for fire damage. Be aware that ANY Teflon product used for heating can be toxic to birds and possibly small animals and infants. So far so good, but be careful!
