Review on Yonico 17702 High-Performance Carbide for Professionals by Matthew Seamster

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Great bits, good body but bad hinges

After purchasing a 100 piece 1/4" shank bit set (Revain ID# B0130Q001Y) I realized I needed more than a few 1/2" shank bits needed. Bits and this set seemed good value for money. As for the bits, they're just great: all bearings (and there are quite a few) are smooth with no play, edges seem great so far, and my test cuts have been smooth. $2 a beat seems too good to be true, but it is. The problem - and the reason I don't give it 5 stars - is this. First off, this is a beautiful maple body with beautifully machined socket joints and a PU finish, which is a very nice surprise for a set of "economy" bits from China. The latches are fine, but the hinges are what you'd expect from something four times the size and they're utterly useless for the application. When the bits arrived there was a rattle in the box and I internally groaned, and upon opening it I found the top completely separated from the bottom with a complete tear off at the bottom hinge. The reason for this is the way it was packaged, with a foam insert and an annealed plastic mold on top that prevents the case from closing completely and will rip off tiny hinges if force is used. bought a 12" brass hinge, put four dimes under the top corners to make room, and installed it - case problem solved!
