Review on Wood Trick Mystery Flower Wooden by Fredrick Edwards

Instructions are not very clear or contain all the information

This puzzle box seems to have been relaunched with a music box. It's very pretty and we were able to open it up a bit with the handles. However, there are some design/instruction errors that need to be fixed. We've collected over 50 wooden puzzles from Wood Trick, Ugears, ROKR and EWA Wood Art so far, so sanding and smearing the wax very carefully goes without saying. We read the assembly instructions from start to finish to understand how the gears interact. We check the gear lock at each stage of assembly. As such, we believe there are some rough edges in the redesign that need to be addressed. Have files, glue, hammers, and other tools ready for this project! Some panels are very loose to assemble and need to be glued in place, while others need to be extended 1/32 inch (sometimes up to 1/16 inch) for the panels to fit snugly together. The panel containing the music box is one such problematic panel. A cable bent to disable jukebox playback is problematic. It works, but the design could be better. You need to assemble six sides (or panels) plus the top of the membrane to form a hexagonal box. We believe some instructions are missing as the gears on some of the panels' outer walls don't seem to be doing anything; The gears attached to the outer handles sometimes do not mesh with the gears attached to the inner wall of the corresponding plate. Is that a design flaw or are the gears superfluous? Problems arose when adding the top of the membrane - from page 34. In the end, after much effort in assembling, the handles did not fully open the membrane lid. You have to press your finger to fully open. (The assembly video is useless with this question as it never shows how the knobs work; the opening is opened by the assembler's fingers, not the knobs. Could this problem have existed before the puzzle box was redesigned?) The instructions on page 46 are under. stupid, because if you turn the key on the music box counterclockwise, it falls off. You can't stop playing music until it's done. (We found the melody played too short anyway.) On page 55 (and subsequent instructions), we could not get the indicated button to "click" as the instructions suggested. The locking mechanism does not click properly where it should fit, so the slide switch on page 56 is not working properly. The other handle shown on page 55 (marked "1" and "2") does not extend or retract; therefore the instructions on page 57 are meaningless. We are upset. Finally, we have a music box/treasure chest that is far from perfect. The handle opens the opening three quarters. (Open it with your finger, as in Wood Trick's online video.) The music box is playing. It's a beautiful thing, but we expected perfection as we followed the directions very carefully when they were written. We bought three sets to craft for Christmas gifts, but the other two will likely be returned - no matter how pretty the music box is - as all that pointless work on the gear assemblies seems like a waste of time and effort.

Pros
  • Easy to use
Cons
  • Lots of stuff
