Review on Gigabyte TRX40 AORUS PRO Motherboard by Jamal Gignilliat

Revainrating 2 out of 5

Works well, although there are some oddities

For the most part, this motherboard is fine. It works great for gaming and high-bandwidth computers (it's not a bottleneck). Overall, it's great for the price (considering it's $2-$300 less than other MOBOs). That's more expensive than the ASUS ROG Zenith II Extreme MOBOA. A few things to note: - There is a fan on the motherboard chipset that the case has. This case protrudes slightly from the circuit board. I had to use some force to install the GPU because the case didn't allow it to be fully inserted. It was a little annoying, but nothing went wrong. and a second x16 PCIE slot, you would almost completely cut off airflow to the motherboard chipset. I installed 3 GPUs (x16 x16 x8). The second x8 would not fit on a full size GPU as the motherboard case pins would be blocked. I had to buy a PCIE riser and use the GPU as a graphics card. Please note that this is not unique to this motherboard, many motherboards have this issue. As previously mentioned, a DIMM touches the heatsink. This only applies if the heatsink is large. I installed an ECC RAM that doesn't have a heat spreader. Distance wasn't an issue and it doesn't affect thermals. Also, the height profile is a bit lower than my RAM, so installing an air cooler shouldn't be a problem. Some say they don't match their water blocks. I bought a Bitspower Summit EL-X. It fits well. Keep in mind that Threadrippers are big chips and common sense would have less "real estate" on the motherboard. 4-pin 12V RGB not working? Or have I not understood? not important enough to care - the I/O screen is connected to the MOBO. Unusual. - Wi-Fi was not plug and play. At least on Linux. Of course Ethernet > Wifi. - Bios overclocking is weird. You have to scroll through the list, which always starts with the lowest values (e.g. 8x multiplier related to 100MHz = 8MHz. Who is currently using the processor at this level). - Under Linux I had problems with determining the processor temperature. In the end I found the zenpower ocerman github. From then on it worked great. - The performance was excellent. When tested on Cinebench R20, the results were above average from the base frequency to 4.5 GHz. Of course there are more factors. The thing is, it works fine.

Pros
  • High marks for support and durability from testers
Cons
  • Not as thick as other options
