I ordered this backpack mainly for cycling on the upcoming trip with our 9kg Chihuahua and it seems fine. It is 14 inches from nape to tail (collar to base of tail) and will *barely* fit in a large one as you can see in the picture. I was considering ordering XL but I think a large size will fit. He can sit comfortably but I doubt he could curl up and take a nap. The straps are not very comfortable but they work as the price couldn't be better. Note: I remembered someone commenting that a woman with larger breasts might feel uncomfortable with straps criss-crossing the bust. After denigrating it for a while, I can well imagine that it will. I really appreciate the adjustable neck opening; My shy chi would certainly be tempted to crawl out if the hole were bigger. Also, be prepared for my back to get sweaty in warm weather, there's not much air in there, and even my pup was breathing during our first test run (it's 85 degrees in Virginia, to be honest). :-)
