Maui SUBEA Experience

I have snorkeled in both the Caribbean and Hawaii and used traditional mask and snorkel combos before the Subea Triboard. In preparation for my trip to Maui, I researched masks and snorkels and saw the new full face masks. I found many positive reviews with a lot of debate as to whether or not the model/seller they bought from actually sold genuine Tribord masks. My rating is based on purchasing a model from this list from a CLT GEAR seller. The bag that came with the mask has an RFID tag that says "EASYBREATH" and a serial number - I bought two - one in Atoll (Aqua) and one in blue - and the serial numbers were different on each. There is no brand name on the mask and a nondescript logo, and "SUBEA" is written on the hose. I hope this helps with "authentication" issues. Now check the fit and functionality. My wife has a rounder face and I have a narrower face, but our measurements from the bridge of the nose to the bottom of the chin are about the same and within the manufacturer's S/M size. I found it hard to believe that a mask of the same size would fit our faces snugly considering the widths are so different. I went ahead and ordered and when they arrived my wife was fine all round but without getting in the water I couldn't tell if it really sealed my whiskeys. Our flight to Maui was the next morning so we put them in our cases - the tube is detachable so they're pretty flat and compact. On Maui, we first tried them in the resort's saltwater pool and found that once you dip your face in the water, all the gaps are closed. The amount of air through the snorkel/vent valve is actually pretty decent, which some other reviewers noted as an issue - enough for me for snorkeling and even enough for light freestyle. We have not encountered any problems with breathing through the nose or mouth. The vision is amazing, the mask does not interfere and does not fog up. This is achieved through a design that has a seal from the bridge of the nose to the sides of the cheeks that isolates all breathing, and this breathing chamber houses a vent valve that releases air and water and vents that run down the sides. Masks on the tube behind the head. The tubing attaches to the top of the mask and has an O-ring that seals it. The next test was underwater diving. In the resort pool, we tested up to five feet. The hose seals off water excellently. Our mouths never watered. We noticed some water protection in the mask when diving under it, but with a small adjustment of the mask it thickens and - I can't explain - the water stops covering and doesn't fill a field of view. or breathing chamber - we never had to surface to remove the mask. Impressed by the pool challenge, we embarked on an open water adventure the next day. We started on the south side of Maui and worked our way north, snorkeling a total of five different reefs and enjoying fish, coral, turtles, sea urchins and more. Maui but ka oh sure. My wife stayed on the surface but I dove 20+ feet and had no ear issues to relieve the pressure - I saw other reviewers had this issue but I didn't. The tube effectively blocked spatter from the waves. Another cool feature is the orange top of the tube, which makes it easy to see where your partner is when you get separated. As mentioned above, there were no fogging issues, so the anti-fog spray I bought didn't open. The elastics that hold the mask on your head take a long time to dry in wet (beach) weather, and if you don't rinse them thoroughly, they'll trap that horrible sea smell. One of the concerns we have is whether the feeling of seasickness after our big day of expedition was caused by the masks or by spending so much time snorkeling combined with Maui's inter-site roads and hula cake, which concludes our lunch in Kimos. The mask looks unlike anything else - my first impression was that it was a beginner's dive mask - but now I can say that my wife and I are completely convinced. One final note, I'm writing this at a mainland pool and our little teens just tried them and they worked great for them too. The three are very happy that they don't have to use a whistle that was in someone's mouth. My brother-in-law, 55, who has a longer chin length bar, tried it on dry land and it didn't reach his chin so he needed a size L. Looks like you can stick to size. Specifying in the product description and ignoring the width of your face. Remember to use coral-safe sunscreen. I hope this review is helpful and that you have great snorkeling adventures no matter what type of mask you use.
