Review on 🎨 Derwent Tinted Charcoal Pencils: 24 Count Metal Tin, 4mm Core - Premium Artist Grade by Kristen Simpson

Revainrating 4 out of 5

fun to play! best art supplies, painting and art supplies

I finally tried these out by ordering them a few months ago. I warn you, be prepared to use a holder and watch where you put your hands, but that's pretty typical of any charcoal product. They remind me of pastels, they wear and work very similarly. They blended very well, the effect was much smoother than I expected. The tonal range is limited and muted, but that wasn't a disadvantage for me as I was initially only interested in black pencils for working out the details in ordinary charcoal drawings. If you are looking for a wider/vibrant color palette I would go with pastels. These pencils have the nice, thick leads that Derwent pencils have always had, and actually held up better than my Derwent Drawing pencils in terms of softness and breakage. I've posted my quick portrait, only on fine serrated paper so you can get an idea of the colors and blending ability. The 4 vs. 5 star rating is due to the similarity of several colors in a set of 24.

Pros
  • Get the traditional charcoal effect with more control and less mess
Cons
  • Legacy
