Review on πŸ“· Sigma 18-300mm F3.5-6.3: The Ultimate Contemporary Advanced Lens by Daniel Boudreau

Versatile but seems to have less than 250mm focal length

I bought this lens so I wouldn't have to keep switching between Nikon 18-105 and 55-200 while kayaking, bull kayaking or skydiving. He does just that! Works 100% with D7100 and D90. My main goal of not constantly changing lenses was achieved. But here are some things to consider. Observations: The zoom ring is tighter than any other lens I have, but not too tight. It just needs a more focused grip. Focusing is as fast as my 200mm but quieter. It moves backwards from all my Nikon lenses, clockwise instead of counterclockwise. My left hand is so confused right now. The set of accessories that comes with this pack is amazing. Not premium stuff but I think I got $90 stuff for 20. It's heavy and long. I will be using a tripod more than before as my 105 is short and heavy and my 55-200 is long but light. That's both. I (and others) have found that this particular Sigma is not a true 300mm length. I am NOT AT ANY better telephoto position than with my Nikon 55-200 ED VR. Check out my photos taken with a Nikon 200, Sigma 300 and a fairly old Nikon 300. It has greater coverage than the 200, but looks 10% larger than the 33% math suggests. I'm tempted to deduct a star for this, but I'm too happy with it to be mean. The exif file info shows it's a 300mm focal length, fwiw. If you want to go beyond 200mm at all, skip this. It is not worth.

Pros
  • Great for me
Cons
  • Long wait
