If you are interested in needle felting, I sincerely recommend purchasing the Clover felting mat. This is a great item to add to your felting tool kit. I would only recommend it for "flat" projects, not 3D objects like animal sculptures. It's not designed for those details. It's quite small, only 2 3/4 inches by 3 1/2 inches, so keep that in mind if you have a specific project you want to work on. For small pieces, however, it's spot on. Personally, I use it to create flat Christmas decorations along with cookie cutters. The bristles allow you to feel the product with both sides being fairly flat. When using felt foam, the wool often penetrates the foam, creating uneven surfaces. However, a rug will give you a consistent shape throughout. Be careful when piercing the piece so you don't pierce it too far as it's pretty easy to grope all the way to the base, endangering your needle. It's better to do it slowly. If you are starting out in needle felting I would recommend this rug to start with. This is a great tool that you will definitely use again for everything from doll clothes to jewelry.
