The rough texture helps with grip.

I've always had this case for my last three Android phones. I like it because during "one-handed exercises" I always use the kickstand to put my ring finger on it so I don't drop it. And I never do. The texture also helps with this. But there's always a first time for everything, and when I dropped it I realized it didn't have enough protection from the top and bottom. Don't get me wrong, I still love it. I'll probably only switch to it every now and then.
