I peeled all of the skin off the tip of my thumb by pressing the button and pulling the pole to loosen it. Seriously, use a wrench, marker or whatever to poke it in while removing the steering wheel. My 5 year old loves the scooter, it's fun and lights up. No complaints, just fingers crossed!
