How do you know if you need it? If your air conditioner fan only runs at some speeds but not others, that is the function of this resistor. Often the only speed that works is high, or the two fastest. The lower the speed setting, the hotter the resistance will be. It is cooled by being in an airbox where fresh air is forced past the cooling resistor. Resistors fail due to age - my van is now 16 years old and despite low mileage - no wonder the resistor failed. IF your fan motor is making or making noise, a damaged or faulty fan motor will burn out your new resistor very quickly. If your motor is noisy, replace it, or in some cases it could just be dirt in the fan assembly. heating box. The resistor is prominently located on the passenger side to the left of the electric fan itself. You can find it easily. It is removed with two small screws and then disconnected from the motor and 6-wire connector on the resistor body itself. If you're lucky, the new one will fit right away. If you're like me, the hole in the heater box is too small. I had to use a utility knife to pry open the slot at the top and bottom of the hole until the new one went straight in. Even with the need to change the hole to match, the total installation time was 20 minutes. There would be 5 vertices if it was a direct entry.
