I bought these socks for my sister whose basement leaks when it rains. Your basement won't flood, but water will seep in through the foundations. Then the water runs in the wrong direction and into the wrong sewage system. They prevent water from flowing in the wrong direction while absorbing most of it. She had to use newspapers to soak up the water, which works but is dirty. I don't recommend this, but she puts a pig in an old pillowcase (in case the pig tears) and ties off the end of the pillowcase and runs a second pillowcase with another pig, two at a time, down the drain circuit into her washing machine to fix that get the most water and dry faster. She's done this a few times so far. The pigs are just wet with no mud or slush. So far, so good. But her washing machine is older, more powerful. My washing machine doesn't have a drain cycle without having to run the water through the cycle, but their washer doesn't add extra water to the hogs, just drains the available water. I can't say how long the pigs last, but they helped her deal with the problem when it rains.
