I have purchased several adjustable coil springs that needed to be restored. The adjustable collar got stuck and the lack of a proper wrench made adjustment difficult. I rented some spring compressors from an auto parts store and they didn't fit between the coils because the coils of the spring were too close together (see picture). These allow me to slip them between the spring stages and properly compress the springs to separate them. They are inexpensive but work very well. As previously mentioned, bars flex under pressure, but straighten up when the load is removed. I would recommend them to anyone who needs spring compressors.
