Great Hack for MacGyvering Baby Gates

We have two baby gates but not for one baby. Instead we use them to keep our young/clumsy/big dog from going upstairs. I've tried three different types/sizes of kids gates and they all fit GREAT where I need them, but not completely. I'm apparently the only person on earth who wants to stop another mammal from climbing a ladder, but he also has a ladder that has a wall on one side and an open wooden railing on the other. The number of options for this scenario is surprisingly limited. We really wanted to avoid having to drill it into the wall since we had this type for our real human babies, but even the ones you drill into the wall don't have a great option of what to do with the railing side. . So you have to fiddle with the tension adjustments on each end of the gate to try and make it tight enough to stand up but loose enough that you can still open the gate. And because of how our ladder was installed, the range we can place it over the plank meant it was constantly at an unstable angle. a platform on which the gate could reach both walls. But even if we *finally* secure it in place, all it takes is one kid leaning on it, another kid covering it too much, or the dog will see the cats and use it as a prop to get up, the better to become . and the whole thing is Humpty Dumpty. I bought these wall caps because the pressure from the gate ends would damage the wall/wooden railing and every time the gate fell the wall would scratch and break. I was hoping this would help prevent damage to the wall and also give it a bit more stability. We also had the problem that while the gate says it fits a certain width, it doesn't actually fit that certain width in a safe way. You should unroll the ends almost until they fall out. I've made a MacGyver out of every possible combination of gates + added + removed certain parts of the lever handles, but adding these cups to just one side was the ONLY right size for the gate. This gave it the extra length it needed to fit where I needed the gate and also helped keep the gate from constantly slipping. I am very happy to report that the gate has been perfectly comfortable since installation and has only fallen down once when my four year old was hanging on the door. So I probably didn't use them for their normal use. but if you are trying to maneuver your baby gate in an unusual place where nothing else will fit, I recommend you give it a try. I can also confirm that they help prevent damage to the wall and limit the movement of the gate relative to the wall. Very glad this small purchase saved the day.
