Review on ๐Ÿพ Optimized Pet Life Jacket by Paws Aboard by Justin Larjin

Revainrating 2 out of 5

Defective but well built, needs repair

This is a regular lifejacket. This would be fine for small or small to medium sized breeds under 35 pounds that aren't athletic and you're just trying to prevent accidental drowning and they hang out in the water but don't necessarily swim. This is not good for medium or large deep-chested breeds, and especially not for active dogs. There are design flaws, but it's well done. The front bib tucks into the sleeve on the opposite side with a buckle that doesn't stay in place and quickly detaches leaving it dangling. In deep-chested dogs, the chest/belly strip will slide back after some activity. This is a heavy duty Velcro, although it may work on a dog with a more square body. The chest and waist straps must be folded and tucked in after tightening, otherwise they may get caught on the hind leg. You can pull your dog out of the water by the back strap and he'll hold on, so that's valuable. It comes in bright colors and is great for catching your dog's attention in dark waters. In my opinion it is moderately bulky, especially for an athletic dog. The flotation device does not keep the chin or head above the water, so it is NOT intended for older dogs, disabled dogs or poor swimmers, not for puppies. I have a 58lb active lab that we took on a river float at the last minute and it was the best I could get before I left as I had lost my previous one. Still, given my bad rating, I was glad I had it as the current on the river was very fast and I was afraid it would tire - so better than nothing. Otherwise I would not have chosen this one. Ruffwear will be my next purchase as they have backpacks that we already use and are well designed and easy to assemble - they have a new model coming soon that is out of stock. Can't go back because I used it and felt like it was on me. Consider this review before purchasing. To be clear, I'm a legitimate vet for anything that matters to you and I feel like I have a pretty good idea of what your dog's buoyancy aid should and shouldn't be doing. The seller is excellent, I have no problems with him. The product needs work.
