Review on ๐Ÿ”ง Revolutionary Norton Flattening Tool Enhances Waterstones Efficiency by Ronnie Segobiano

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Great but details matter

My waterstones include 250, 400, 600, 1000, 1000, 1000 and 6000. They have been badly worn from long use. For a first attempt at leveling, this Norton leveling stone has gotten a pretty tough job. The Norton Leveling Stone was fairly flat when delivered. I checked the top and bottom with a ruler - they are very flat. After going through all 8 water stones, I checked the water stones for flatness with a ruler. Huge improvement, but not literally flat. Checked the leveling stone. Well, now the leveling stone was slightly concave. So I flipped the rock and used the very flat ground for a few more shots. It worked well on all 8 stones. To restore the flatness of the Norton stone, I used a strip of 80 grit sandpaper over a piece of granite countertop. {I did NOT do this on my granite kitchen countertop. It was a piece of granite from a countertop installer.) A few passes was enough. This Norton Stone is aggressive. Its job is to corrode the elevations of the water stones. Pay attention to the surface of the water stone. STOP when it gets flat or you will wear out the expensive water stone. Check the flatness of the waterstones with a good ruler. Often this is a tool like a triangle. But ONLY use a ruler. It doesn't matter if the canvas is square around the edges as long as it's FLAT. A smooth plane, like a geometry lesson. The flat work surface of my stones was square around the edges when purchased, but after some use it was easy to see that the top and bottom were not parallel, but these surfaces were FLAT. Carpenters can put together a very expensive set. Cutting tools such as chisels and planes. Rocks to keep them sharp also cost real money. Creating and maintaining proper edges becomes hopeless when the bricks are no longer truly flat. This leveling stone makes a big difference at a very affordable price. A diamond plate would be nice, but this leveling stone is only 10% to 20% the cost of a diamond plate.
