I have sharpened dozens of knives with it and I can say that it works very well. As with any stone, you must maintain a certain angle when sharpening. However, using a finer grit helps control mistakes while still providing more than enough stock removal to get the job done in record time (assuming you're not trying to redo the blade, just sharpen it). The holding pad also works very well. The work surface is large and retains its sharpness despite intensive use. Needless to say, this is not the method you should use for fairly curved blades; You have to be a craftsman to get it right (I use ceramic sticks). But for kitchen and traditional utility knives, that's fine!
