Review on πŸ“ StarTech.com eSATAp 2.5" Portable External Hard Drive Enclosure - SATA III HDD/SSD Enclosure with UASP (S251SMU33EP) by Henry Johnston

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Convenient portable storage.

It takes some time to get this case from Revain but it's worth the wait. I bought $9 cases at auction and was dying to compare them to this one. First, there's an 18-inch cable in the box. The cable is quite stiff, causing the drive to slide off the table when plugged in. I would put rubber feet on the bottom of the case. Attaches to the plastic base with 4 screws. Two more tiny screws on the side and you're done. My Sabertooth Z77 motherboard has an advanced UASP feature that enables faster speeds on USB 3.0 with this advanced chassis. I don't have a SATA III drive to test this feature. With the WD Black 750 GB drive I get 128 MB/s read and 129 write on USB 3.0. With USB 2.0, that's 35 reads and 30 writes. It's the same as the $9 cases. , as well as larger Startech and MAX5g cases with SATA II drives. For other brands of enclosures, I have to format drives with USB2 before I can use them with USB3. This case is suitable for USB3 (Win7x64) and doesn't tend to part with small files. The drive is attached to the inside of the aluminum case, so the heat dissipation is good and the drive is not so well protected from impact. In the box you get the case, screws, screwdriver and cable. Since CrystalMark's numbers match my other cases so well, I'm guessing that you should get around 260MB/s R/W in this case with a SATA III drive and a UASP-enabled board. With an SSD, who knows?
