Let me first say that I bought these to use as open frames for some of the cork squares that I have. I also bought 5 of these sets (I needed 20 frames and that was the best deal for the size I needed). I did not use "glass" or mats. I can say that most of the reviews are correct - these don't have the typical frame glass. It reminds me more of thin acrylic or plexiglass, like the cheap poster frames I bought as a teenager. As for the film on it - most of me had already peeled off when I opened the box so I don't think it will be difficult to pull off the rest of the way as some reviews say. Carpets are decent. No these are not the nice thick ones you get in the frames department but for the price I paid for these frames they are good mats and if I wanted to use them they would do the job. The frames themselves were perfect. All seams are sealed (no gaps like other frames I've ordered) and the black color has a smooth finish. I ended up spray painting mine a medium gray because I decided I wanted a lighter color. I recommend sanding the frames lightly if you plan to paint them. I didn't and the paint scratched in a few places just to hold it up to plug in and hang. I wasn't too concerned about it as it was my fault for not sanding it first and when I was done they just gave them a tattered look. All in all, if you're looking for a good basic frame offering, I'd definitely recommend them.
