I bought two of these 3 years ago. Emptying it several times a week and rinsing it before refilling it and cleaning it with white vinegar once a month will keep it really clean. After 2 years one started making noises. I finally decided to open it up, just wiped the fan down with a compressed gas rag (see photo for what it looked like when I opened it up) and everything was back to normal! I also bought the smaller ones for my kids rooms and recommend these even more as you can turn off the base very easily and being smaller you will surely need to empty and rinse them daily.
